About Us --E-Mail- admin@checkleyjubileeplayers.co.uk
Checkley Jubilee Players was formed on Monday 24th January 1977 . A decision had been made to present a pantomime in June to commemorate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. And so Wednesday 8th June saw the opening performance of Mother Goose in Checkley school, produced by founder Stan Cookson.

Originally intended as a one off production, this became the first of many regular shows produced by the Players, Aladdin following quickly in February of 1978. Shows produced regularly since have covered a wide variety of material, though most typically classic English comedy. Ayckbourn , Cooney, Priestley, King, Benfield and many more have all been produced. In between times more serious material has been presented, including historical dramas, thrillers and a Passion Play.

The venues have changed over the years; from the mid 80's we left Checkley school behind to show in Tean Village Hall for a number of years, until in the early 90's, at first on temporary staging and subsequently on the excellent permanent stage of Checkley Community Centre. This has now become our home. In and amongst, the Players have showed in other venues – including the splendidly atmospheric St Mary's Church Checkley, Dilhorne Recreation Centre and elsewhere.

Throughout this period our membership has steadily grown, as has our general technical resource for producing quality drama. So now five years into the new century we have sufficient support to reliably fill the hall each night for a four show run, generally twice each year.

Today our membership stands at around 40, with around 20 regularly taking parts on the stage. Other vital support is front of house, ticket sales, catering, technical, production staff etc. And the best bit is….Checkley Jubilee Players is a fun, friendly family group open to new members of all ages.
